The original Lost On… adventure started back in 2001 when I was dreaming of ways to escape the rat race and explore the world by any means necessary. Motorcycles seemed the obvious medium as you can ride them across the planet on a wing and a prayer, strap your life to it and spend the rest of your days as a modern day Don Quixote on your metal steed. I expressed my desire to my best mate Mark ‘Bogman’ Beveridge. He was a little hesitant but after a few months decided it would be a good opportunity to see the world.

A little later one of our best friends died on one of our camping trips. Jimmy was found at the bottom of a cliff next to where we were camping. To this day, we don’t know if he slipped, jumped or thought he could fly. He had been recovering from drug-induced schizophrenia and was well on his way back to reality studying at university, running his own radio show and performing for the masses. This changed our lives forever. He was an amazing man who made the most out of every second he lived on this planet.

Jimmy dreamed big. He was one of very few people in my life who really believed he was capable of just about anything. We shared many dreams together. He gave me the strength and determination to dream up an adventure that would change the way I live my life forever – and thanks to him I can never turn back.

Mark and I planned to raise aware for the prevention of Youth Suicide and Prevention by being the youngest people to circumnavigate the earth by land and sea on a motorcycle and the first to visit the seven natural wonders of the world by land and sea. The fundamental philosophy of the trip was to turn a dream into reality. We hoped to inspire others to make the most of their own lives, conduct their own adventures and live their own dreams.

Over the following years the journey was designed, and we embarked from Australia in December 2003. Six weeks before we left another great friend Geoff ‘Tomma’ Thomas returned home to join the Lost On… Crew.

Not everything worked our as planned. Around April 2004 Mark returned home due to financial difficulties. In May 2004 Geoff fell in love with his future wife and slowly rode his way to Miami where he still lives today. My bike broke down many times and I became lost in the journey. Documenting the trip by diary, photo and video. 90,000kms later I arrived in the Arctic Circle – September 2005.

I returned home to walk my brother down the aisle and raise some finances to continue the journey but ended up getting injured in an unfortunate accident and fell into a short battle with depression. The idea of breaking a world record lost its allure as I became addicted to the idea of inspiring others to live their dreams and creating conduits through which people can experience the races, places and faces that filled my reality on the road.

True adventure lies in the journey, not the destination.

Traveler, your footsteps
are the road, nothing more;
traveler, there is no road,
you make the road by walking.
By walking you make the road,
and when you look back
you see the path that
you’ll never walk again.
Traveler, there is no road,
only wakes in the sea.

Caminante, son tus huellas
el camino, y nada más;
caminante, no hay camino,
se hace camino al andar.
Al andar se hace camino,
y al volver la vista atrás
se ve la senda que nunca
se ha de volver a pisar.
Caminante, no hay camino,
sino estelas en la mar.

Antonio Machado (1875 – 1939)
